Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 Review

Asus has teamed up with AMD to double down on the trend of increasingly compact gaming laptops with the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (starts at $1,049.99; $1,449.99 as tested), a 14-inch near-ultraportable with full gaming capabilities. The main attraction here beyond the petite size is a brand-new AMD Ryzen 9 processor, the first “Zen 2” laptop CPU we’ve tested. We’re happy to report that it’s blistering fast across the board, equally ready for gaming and media workloads, and superior to the competition. Intel, on the other hand, will not be happy; this efficient CPU is also a great value, and Team Red now threatens its hold on the mobile market. This processor is just one (major) aspect of the full Zephyrus G14 package: an attractive and portable package with high frame rates, and our new midrange gaming Editors’ Choice.

What is the Zephyrus G14?

Asus has teamed up with AMD to double down on the trend of increasingly compact gaming laptops with the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (starts at $1,049.99; $1,449.99 as tested), a 14-inch near-ultraportable with full gaming capabilities. The main attraction here beyond the petite size is a brand-new AMD Ryzen 9 processor, the first “Zen 2” laptop CPU we’ve tested. We’re happy to report that it’s blistering fast across the board and equally ready for gaming and media workloads, and better than the competition. Team Red, on the other hand, will not be happy; this efficient CPU is also a great value, and Team Black now threatens its hold on the mobile market. This processor is just one (major) aspect of the full Zephyrus G14 package: an attractive and portable package with high frame rates, and our new midrange gaming Editors’ Choice.

Ditch the mouse and keyboard

All of this good news and excellent performance come with a price. The Zephyrus comes with a comfortable, but now-classic, single-user mouse and keyboard setup, complete with a standard mousepad and a multimedia mouse that doubles as a trackball. Affixed to the left side of the laptop, the single-user control box is bright, loud, and clear, but still slightlyCarbon-based. Affixed to the right side of the laptop, the single-user control box is smaller and less cluttered but still lacks a motorized trackball. The downside is that the built-in keyboard feels a little rocky like it might be having a hard time getting compacted down between the two boxes.

Go all-in with AMD APUs

Asus makes a mark with light, portable laptops that come with AMD hardware. The ROG Zephyrus G14 is no exception. Built around a 14-inch display with 2K resolution, 2 GB of RAM, and an affordable price tag, the ROG Zephyrus G14 is a great all-around laptop for people who want a small, light, and powerful machine with a big gaming potential. Internal storage is expandable up to 32 GB, and the machine has an integrated 3D graphics chip that can run Visual C ++, Cascades, and OpenCL programming, meaning it can run just about any application and graphics card it supports.

Dual-GPU support

As we mentioned above, the Zephyrus comes with support for two NVIDIA GPUs, the GeForce GTX 10 series and the GeForce RTX 20 series, as well as two AMD GPUs, the Radeon RX 470 and RX 480 series. The large display and high-res, multi-touch display provide the needed resolution for these cards, and the device can even be linked to a multi-GPU solution. All of this is controlled via a single, dedicated button, which we call the ” Pigs Eye “. The button is located on the front right-hand side of the device and gives you a clear view of the internal components and what’s happening inside.

Battery

When it comes to the battery life of mobile devices, Asus is well-versed. The Zephyrus comes with a 3000 mAh battery, which is enough juice to power the device for about seven days. We recommend using the device in moderate to strong gaming or media applications but should be able to get by with only 3 to 4 days of juice left. We highly recommend using the device in maxed-out graphics settings, as this will help boot up the graphics card as smoothly and quickly as possible. With a little over 8 GB of free storage space, the device can easily be filled with games, apps, and game trophies.

Storage

Asus has always loved storing files and apps, and the Zephyrus G14 does just that. Internal storage is expandable up to 128 GB, and the device features a Status LED to monitor the health of the internal drive. There’s also a Micro SD card slot to add more storage space or make it less than 32 GB in size. The Zephyrus comes with an integrated microSD card slot, so you can add more storage space and still have room for games and apps.

Display

The display on the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 is a 10-inch LCD with a resolution of 1600 x 900 and a column-shattering resolution of 3200 x 1600. That’s packed with pixel-peeping pixels to ensure a smooth display, and the device supports 1920 x 1080 resolution TFT LCD screens. The display is bright, has an excellent contrast ratio, and comes with a nice brightness/sustain cycle for long periods of use. There’s also an On-Off button to turn the display on and off with one press of the hand, which is helpful when used with an infant or toddler (or when leaving the device on a nightstand).

ASUS ROG Zephyrus Review

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 is a great laptop for mid-and edge-of-the-line users looking for a powerful gaming machine with a little space left over. The device has a Core i9-8950HK processor, which is plenty for games and everyday use, and comes with 16 GB of RAM. It also comes with 256-bit data connectivity, meaning you can connect it to a network and still have enough juice to handle all your needs. The device is powered by an efficient 3000 mAh battery, which can provide up to 7 days of juice.

Zephyrus G14 Features

Multi-touch screen, status LED Internal storage up to 128 GB 2 GB DDR4 SDRAM External storage (SD card or USB) up to 32 GB Graphic card support for any laptop When it comes to the Zephyrus, there are few more important features than providing a high-quality display. The display on the Zephyrus is a 10-inch display with a resolution of 1600 x 900, and it supports 120 Hz refresh rate panels. There’s also a 3D technology available in the form of Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) panels, which are either optically or magnetically coupled, meaning they have a high capacity and low power consumption. There’s a lot of potential with these technologies, but we like the idea of a regular, unmagnified display that can be used for general entertainment and media content.

Conclusion

The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 is a great laptop for anyone who wants a powerful, portable, and affordable gaming laptop. It’s packed with the latest and greatest hardware, so you get full performance and an excellent amount of storage space, making it a great all-around laptop. If you’re looking for a laptop with some storage space, you’ll love the ASUS Zephyrus G15, which comes with 2TB of storage. If you’re looking for a serious gaming machine, the Zephyrus G14 is the perfect laptop for you.
